Reeds Mill Church
Madrid Historical Society

Madrid Historical Society was built in 1872. It was one of 12 schoolhouses built in Madrid and was an active school until 1959. The quilt block featured depicts the Reeds Mill Church which was was built in 1892 on land donated to the Reeds Mill Baptist congregation by Lewis Reed,  owner of Reeds Mill located near the church site.  It is the only church ever built in Madrid, Maine. Off the road and surrounded by trees it is fondly referred to as “The Church in the Wildwood”, as depicted by the two evergreens in the square.  In fact, every service begins with Hymn #367, The Church in the Wildwood.  It is a simple, one room building with no water, no electricity. But there is a fine outhouse, wood stove, and the original kerosene lamps and organ.  The architecture is similar to the Madrid Village Schoolhouse built 20 years earlier. There are 11 services each year, mostly in the summer months, 2:00 Sunday afternoons. Other services include Thanksgiving morning and a Candlelight Service at Christmastime.
